Q. How can I finish cedar?
A. Cedar lumber takes stains very well. There are many
colors on the market today and for outdoor items, adding a coat every year
or so will keep your furniture looking vibrant. Cedar also has naturally
occurring oils that
keep the wood from rotting. If you choose to let your piece age naturally
it will turn a silver-gray and the wood will not be affected at all. In
fact, the natural oils help prevent decay and ward off insects. If you would
like to
paint your piece we suggest that you apply an outdoor primer and two coats
of outdoor paint.
Facts about cedar
Cedar is the lightest of any commercial wood in the United States and also
has natural preservatives that make it resistant to decay, rot, and insects.
Thus, it is often used in products that are in direct contact with water and
soil.
Many other types of wood will display excessive bowing and warping
depending on the environment it is placed in. Cedar adjusts well to all
climate conditions, making it a great choice for furniture, garden beds,
fencing and other projects in many environments.
