is located in the backwoods setting of Portage Lake. This is where the charm
of Northern New England hugs a wilderness edge while surrounded by the
Canadian border. Portage Mills began over 48 years ago when sawmills
followed the woodsmen to the next area of thick woods. The mill became
permanent in the late 1960's. The mill is now owned and operated by Pat
Lovley and his sons, Shawn and Seth, who concentrate on products made from
the superior quality and durability of northern white cedar
Portage Mills purchases superior cedar logs from local professionally certified logging contractors whom practice sound sustainable forest practices. These tree length logs are sawn using with age old proven equipment producing the highest quality products. The wood is then dried, planed, quality inspected and stored on sight. All added value is performed by high value employees on the Portage Mills site. Northern white cedar is naturally decay and insect resistant. Northern White cedar requires minimal maintenance withstanding even the most extreme weather conditions for up to thirty years without needing upkeep. Northern White cedar also has exceptional insulating aspects as well as standing true to the test of time.
